Deepseek's Journey: An AI Success Story and a Farm Tale
Explore Deepseek, the trending AI tool, and how it inspired a heartwarming short story about love, loss, and new beginnings on a farm.
Recently, I was browsing the web to find a topic or idea for my new blog post. I searched for what's currently trending and was surprised to see that Deepseek is gaining attention. It's another AI similar to ChatGPT. But why is it trending now? ChatGPT is already quite good, and there are also Google Gemini and Facebook Meta. What makes Deepseek such a hot topic?
What is Deepseek?
You may have heard of Deepseek, but let me introduce you to it if you haven't. Deepseek is a Chinese Artificial Intelligence tool that assists users with queries, similar to other AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini.
These artificial intelligence programs, including Deepseek, ChatGPT, Gemini, and others, present results differently than a typical Google search. Instead of listing links and snippets, they respond conversationally, much like chatting with a human.
So, why do they mimic human conversation? Because we want AIs to interact that way!
Why is Deepseek trending?
The Deepseek team has done an outstanding job by creating a large language model (LLM) with an investment of just $6 million, a feat that has cost its competitors, like Microsoft, billions of dollars. You might be wondering what LLM is. An LLM (Large Language Model) is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) model designed to understand, generate, and manipulate human language. These models are trained on vast amounts of text data, enabling them to perform a wide range of language-related tasks.
To maintain its leadership in the AI race, the USA has taken significant steps to control exports. These export controls prohibit American companies from selling their most advanced AI chips and other hardware to Chinese companies. As a result, some of Nvidia's most advanced AI hardware is affected by these restrictions.
That’s why DeepSeek’s success is even more surprising. The model was developed using hardware that was not the most advanced. DeepSeek trained its LLM using Nvidia’s midrange H800 AI chips.
My Experience
I was very excited to see what Deepseek could do for me. I had recently written a short story titled "A Special Day for the Farm," so I provided Deepseek with the basic plot of this short story and instructed it to write a new short story of no more than 1,200 words. You can read both stories and form your own judgment.
The Story from Deepseek
The sun dipped low over the horizon, casting a golden glow across the rolling hills of the farm. The air was filled with the scent of hay and the distant hum of crickets. In the corner of the barn, nestled in a bed of straw, a small sheep cub named Lauren nuzzled close to her mother. The warmth of her mother's body and the rhythmic sound of her heartbeat were all Lauren had ever known. It was a simple life, but it was hers.
But that night, everything changed.
The farmhouse was alive with laughter and music. Charles, the farm owner, and his wife Annie were celebrating the birth of their newborn daughter. The entire farm seemed to buzz with excitement, but for Lauren, the world was falling apart.
She watched in horror as the men came for her mother. There was no warning, no time to say goodbye. One moment, her mother was there, and the next, she was gone. Lauren's tiny heart raced as she heard the distant bleats of panic from the other animals. The pigs, the chickens, even the old cow—they were all taken. The farm, once a place of safety, now felt like a prison.
Lauren huddled in the corner of the barn, her small body trembling. She could still smell the faint scent of her mother on the straw, but it was fading fast. The sounds of the party outside grew louder, and Lauren closed her eyes, trying to block it all out. But the images of her mother being led away haunted her.
Days turned into weeks, and Lauren grew stronger. She was no longer the helpless cub she had been. Her legs were sturdy, and her wool was thick and soft. But the pain of losing her mother never left her. She often wandered to the edge of the pasture, staring at the farmhouse where the humans lived. She could hear the baby crying sometimes, a sound that made her heart ache in a way she couldn't understand.
One day, as Lauren grazed near the fence, she saw Annie walking through the field with the baby in her arms. The baby's name was Emily, and she had a head full of dark curls and a smile that could light up the world. Lauren watched them from a distance, her eyes narrowing as she remembered the night her mother was taken.
But as the days went by, Lauren found herself drawn to the baby. There was something about Emily's laughter, so pure and innocent, that reminded Lauren of her own lost childhood. She began to follow them whenever they were outside, always keeping a safe distance but never letting them out of her sight.
One afternoon, as Annie sat on a blanket under the shade of an old oak tree, Emily crawled toward the fence where Lauren stood. Annie was busy knitting and didn't notice her daughter's adventurous spirit. Lauren's heart raced as Emily reached out her tiny hand, her fingers brushing against Lauren's soft wool.
For a moment, Lauren froze. She could feel the warmth of Emily's hand, so small and fragile. And then, something inside her shifted. The anger and pain she had carried since that terrible night began to melt away. She leaned down, gently nuzzling Emily's hand, and the baby giggled with delight.
From that day on, Lauren became Emily's silent guardian. She would follow the baby wherever she went, always watching, always protecting. Annie noticed the bond between them and smiled, though she never fully understood it. To her, Lauren was just a sheep, but to Emily, Lauren was a friend.
As the years passed, Emily grew into a curious and adventurous little girl. She would spend hours in the fields with Lauren, telling her stories and sharing her dreams. Lauren listened, her heart swelling with a love she had never known before. She had lost her mother, but in Emily, Lauren had found a new purpose.
One evening, as the sun set over the farm, Emily sat beside Lauren in the pasture. The air was cool, and the sky was painted with shades of orange and pink. Emily leaned her head against Lauren's side, her fingers twirling a strand of wool.
"Lauren," Emily whispered, "do you think we'll always be friends?"
Lauren looked down at the little girl, her eyes soft and full of emotion. She couldn't speak, but she didn't need to. Emily understood.
And as the stars began to twinkle in the night sky, Lauren made a silent promise. She would protect Emily, no matter what. She would be the guardian her mother couldn't be. For in Emily, Lauren had found not just a friend, but a reason to live.
The farm was no longer a place of loss and pain. It was a place of love, of new beginnings. And as Lauren watched over Emily, she knew that her mother's spirit lived on, not just in her, but in the bond they shared.
And so, under the watchful eyes of the moon, Lauren and Emily sat together, two souls forever connected by a promise made in the quiet of the night.
The End
